In Place of a Real Post...

We saw this little store on our way out of Huntsville.

It's another great use of scare quotes. The sign says
The Prophetic Place - The Place Where "God Speaks"

Right.

PSSHHHhhhhhh....

That's the sound of me deflating.

We're on vacation at a local state park, and this is the view from our cabin:

Pics from Waveland, MS

Some images from our recent mission trip.

Last weekend (October 5) we went to Camp Gulfside at Waveland, Mississippi to do some Katrina recovery work. We did some tearing out of drywall, a lot of repainting, and some shuffling of debris. We took some pics of the surrounding area.

Camp Gulfside was built in the 1920's, and at the time it was the only beach where African-Americans could swim on the Gulf. It was a beautiful place with some historic buildings. They had just finished a million-dollar facility, but now all that remains are pilings:

Here is a tiny scene of morbid beauty:

And a larger one:

This little guy had made his home behind some stepping stones at the house we worked on:

Anyway, we had a good trip. One of the coolest parts was that one of our volunteers was a man with Down's Syndrome, and his presence was a blessing to all the members. Two of our volunteers were women over 70. We had a group of diverse ability, and everyone had an important role to play and made a significant contribution.

We have another group going in November. I may go back again. This is the right time of year to go, because it was not too terribly hot.

Pics from The Story

There are some pics from our alternative worship service, The Story, here.

Since several of the Story worship team have camera phones, we decided to turn our planning blog into a photo and audioblog. I'm hoping we'll post some mp3s there soon.

Scenes from our recent mission trip

Just a few pics of our week.

This was a BIG house - 7800 square feet. It is a home for a family with 10 special needs kids. They are an amazing family.

On our last day, we visited a railroad museum:

Now I have an incredible desire to play Railroad Tycoon.

We passed this sign for a church, the name of which I fell in love with. We looked for the church building, but couldn't find it.

We also saw this church. From what I hear, this one doesn't ask its members to tithe, serve on any committees, attend small group Bible studies, or even participate regularly in worship:

I think it would be perfect for some grumblers I've known.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

File this one under "things that make me mad."

I snapped this photo of a bulletin board of a church I visited. Here you have a great little photo essay on the fundagelical worldview. See the poster on the left? The one that says "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord?" And on the right, an advertisement for the Biblical School of World Evangelism. See the guy in the middle? The white guy? He's clearly out of his depth, because he's surround by black guys with spears. Probably cannibals. Definitely not Christians. The text reads: "What good is a Bible college degree if you don't know how to survive in the mission field?" He should have gone to BSWE, where they probably teach you things like cultural sensitivity. But he's in deep trouble now. Too bad their nation doesn't have the Lord as their God!
