Nailed It.

Abstract:
Relevant magazine has a good article titled O Jesus, Where Art Thou.

Body:
The thing that really got me was the good critique of contemporary music about Jesus. "Praise and worship" songs tend to focus on the emotional state of the songwriter - not on the ineffability, mystery, and glory of God. (I will sing, I will worship, etc.). The "Jesus is my boyfriend" approach is pretty painful sometimes.

The other critique is that they are often individualistic. Hardly surprising, given that most contemporary pop is all about me, and seldom about us, and even more rarely about humanity.

I've been enjoying Jars of Clay's Redemption Songs. Classic hymns remade into good contemporary rock. Sometimes they sound like U2, sometimes they sound more like blues-y, southern rock. It is Well With My Soul sounds like something the Beatles could have sung.
